Sophie kept Cooper occupied during his free time for the next two days. Doing so wasn’t a hardship, since he seemed determined to make love to her every way he knew how—including a few positions she’d never tried before. He stopped extricating himself after they’d exhausted each other, instead curling his big body around hers and holding her until morning.

Sometimes, lying in his arms, she wondered about his nightmares and whether she really had cured them. Was it possible that simply being near her was enough to stop him from returning to a war zone while he slept? The thought both exhilarated and terrified her, making her feel special while simultaneously feeding her fear that she wouldn’t be able to resist Cooper if he decided he wanted to extend their fling.

She already felt herself softening towards him. She liked him. But she couldn’t afford to give him any more than the two weeks they’d agreed to. If she did, she risked losing her heart, and she wasn’t prepared to do that.

So, on Friday, after their bodies had cooled, she untangled herself from him and dressed silently. After a moment, Cooper stirred.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“Heading home,” she replied. Surely it was obvious.

He came up on his elbows. “Why?”

Her heart hammered in her chest. She hadn’t been prepared for that particular question. Hadn’t their deal been ‘no strings’? She shouldn’t have to explain herself. “Because I’m tired.”

It wasn’t untrue. He might be used to getting by with minimal sleep, but his stamina had worn her out.

He frowned, the expression sitting oddly on his sleepy face. “Come back to bed.”

She raised an eyebrow, surprised and a little annoyed by his commanding tone.

“We’ll sleep,” he promised. “That’s all.”

“I don’t sleep very well with you in the bed.” Now, that was a bare-faced lie. Being wrapped in his arms all night long was sublime.

“Oh.” He had the decency to look chastened. “Sorry, I didn’t realize.”

“Don’t worry about it,” she said, guilt pricking her conscience. “But I want to sleep in my own bed tonight.” He started to speak, and she held up a finger. “Alone.”

“Okay.”

He didn’t look the least bit sleepy anymore. Instead, he looked disappointed. Resigned, as if she were sentencing him to relive the worst moments of his life. She didn’t want to put him through that, but she had to protect her heart first and foremost.

“If you change your mind, I’ll be here,” he said.

She nodded, meeting his eyes, which usually sparkled with mischief but now expressed such a depth of despair that she could barely stand to hold his gaze. Her knees weakened, and she longed to throw off her clothes and rejoin him in bed. What had he seen overseas to make the thought of dreaming bring him such sorrow? She couldn’t even imagine.

Sophie bent and kissed him softly, then walked out the door.

Later, alone in her own bed, she didn’t sleep a wink.
